Spring Summer 14 beauty trends – Edinburgh Evening News beauty column

by Sofia

We’re heading into the warmer months- woohoo- so this month in my Edinburgh Evening News beauty column, it’s all about the Spring Summer 2014 beauty trends:

Much like fashion, the change of season welcomes new trends and looks in the world of beauty. So as we head into Spring Summer 2014, if you are freshening up your wardrobe, why not take the opportunity to do the same for your makeup.

Gone is the gothic grunge of Autumn Winter 2013 and in its place comes a more feminine, paired down look. At the Spring Summer 2014 fashion shows, where, as well as the forthcoming fashion trends, the next season’s beauty trends are premiered, beauty buzzwords included radiance and femininity rather than high glamour or drama of previous seasons.

However, the ladylike look isn’t at the cost of colour and fans of strong shades should check out one of this season’s key lip colours: orange. In its most bold and dramatic hue, orange may only suit a specific skin tone. However, for those wishing to dabble, there is a whole range of shades to choose from stretching from soft peach and apricot shades such as the Sweet Spot shade from the new Tom Ford Lip Color Sheer range, through to more flaming sunset hues.

On the eyes, amongst the trends, is a return to a popular eighties beauty look: blue eye shadow. Bright azures and aqua shades through to deep navy were spotted all over the Spring Summer 2014 catwalks.

Covering the eye lid with a bold blue eye shadow is the most dramatic way to wear this; however you could also opt to simply  apply your preferred blue shadow along the lash line. And blue eyeliner is another way to wear to this look, but depending on the shade and where you choose to apply it, it can be as subtle or dramatic as you like. Estee Lauder’s Kajal Crayon in Near Night, from the Derek Lam Runway Makeup Collection, £65 for five products housed in a navy clutch, is a speedy tool to achieve this look.

Gold also littered the SS14 shows with the most striking looks including golden eyebrows and gold-leaf partings in hair. If you consider this a little too dramatic to wear let alone apply, you could still bring a touch of gold into your spring summer makeup look. For instance, wear gold on eyes or alternatively on cheeks thanks to eye shadows and bronzers. And, depending on the occasion, this could also be the opportunity to tie in the peachy orange trend on lips for a pretty, feminine look which should flatter.

Overall, this spring the appearance of skin is all about looking healthy and fresh. On cheeks, mix peach and pink cream blushes with sculpting creams and soft highlights to give the appearance of a face cast in sunlight or a healthy glow; the looks should be soft rather than carved. And heading into the warmer time of year, traditionally heralds a lighter makeup. So now is the time to start investing in skincare and perhaps even treating yourself to treatments such as the Dermaroller which is available in the Beyond MediSpa in Edinburgh’s Harvey Nichols. This will help set your skin up to looking better in the weeks and months ahead.

Hair has been up and down in length these past few seasons.  But for Spring Summer 2014 there is a shift from the stronghold of the big and bouncy blow dry to a return to sleek and straight hair. Alternatively, if you’re having a bad hair day, then embrace your inner ballerina and try another hair trend: the black headband spotted at shows including Victoria Beckham’s.

This is just a smattering of what is on offer. And, not all of these looks will suit everyone so take these trends and use them as inspiration for creating your own beauty looks. But all in all, when it comes to your Spring Summer 14 beauty look, think summery, gorgeous and glowing.
